Return to Trapani stopping at the Salt Pans “Salina Calcara”, now a nature reserve. Free time.

24th March

After breakfast, free time around the beautiful city of Trapani. As an option, there will be a treasure hunt along the city streets. In the afternoon we will meet all together to reveal your discoveries and listen to stories and legends of the town (in English). In the evening, there is the option to attend a traditional event: the “Vestizione dei Misteri”. They are 20 groups of 17th century religious statues, safely guarded at the “Purgatory Church” for all the year. There the statues will be draped and decorated with flowers, plants and silver objects ready for the big event the next day. Everyone is welcome to attend the last phases of the preparation. Free time.

25th March

Today we will have an insight in the life of Trapani’s fishing community, with a visit from a fisherman who will tell us his fascinating story, talk about his work and passion, and show us how to prepare the traditional fishing nets. After that, there will be a tasting of typical Tuna fish food (as bottarga, ficazza, tunnina salata, cuore, polmone di tonno), combined with local white wine. After this tasting we will have the chance to take part to the main folk event of Trapani… The unique Misteri. This is the highlight of the Easter week, an ancient ritual procession of the 20 groups of statues along the streets of Trapani, accompanied by a music group. Free time.

26th March

In the morning there is an option to attend probably the most beautiful part of the Easter procession, to see some breathtaking moments of the entrance of all the groups of Misteri in the Purgatory Church. Then we will visit the medieval town of Erice, an unforgettable hill town surrounded by defensive walls, which is crowned by a castle that dominates the surrounding area from its 2600ft rocky top. There will be an option to go exploring the streets of Erice for a treasure hunt. In the afternoon we will all meet to see your discoveries and to listen to the stories and legends of the town(in English). Return to Trapani. Free time.

27th March

We will start our day visiting the archaeological ruins of Segesta, where an English speaking local tour guide will show us around. Segesta’s ancient Greek temple is one of the best preserved in the world, and its amphitheatre boasts a hilltop position on Mount Barbaro. The archeological site reflects the presence of several ancient civilisations. While the magnificent Doric temple and the theatre are impressive, they are just the highlight of a large archeological park. We will then continue our tour along the North coast stopping by the delightful little town of Castellammare del Golfo, with free time to wander through its narrow streets, stopping at the castle, today museum of local tradition and archaeological findings. Next stop will be the traditional village of Scopello. It is concentrated in a little square with a big sicilian baglio (a fortified structure).
