We advise our guests to rent a car for at least 2 days and discover secrets of the northwest coast.
Monte Cofano Reserve
at about 20 kms from Trapani you can enjoy an unusual landscape with the mountain of 700 meters which is situated on the seafront. Monte Cofano’s Bay joins the chance to relax in the beach also in the rocky corners with flat rocks. For trekking’s lovers we recommend the walk along the mountain that leads directly to the Macari Bay. Along the coast you can see small caves, an ancient Saracen tower, a chapel and the typical Mediterranean vegetation with dwarf palms. It deserves to be seen the ancient cave of Scurati with the typical stone houses where the locals lived until 50 years ago and that now it houses the Museum of Anthropology. During the Christmas period this cave becomes the scene of the Living Nativity with more than 100 characters, from to the typical Sicilian artisans to ordinary people who act out the Nativity.
San Vito lo Capo
Easily reachable by bus or by car directly from Trapani in case you would like to do the tour of the north coast, San Vito lo Capo is a charming fishing town with a living historical center and a long sandy beach. It deserves to be seen the old tuna trap and then, to continue in the direction of the Oriented Natural Reserve of the Zingaro. Zingaro nature reserve is the perfect location for trekking and it is characterized by three paths, one along the coast, one on the hill and another one more mountainous with a nice landscape. The trail along the coast is undoubtedly the most interesting for the possibility to appreciate the typical Mediterranean scrub and also for combining relaxing moments in the crystal waters teeming with fish, especially sea bream and sargos.
Castellammare del Golfo: reachable by car or by bus. The small fishing town is considered a nice crib on the sea, due to its characteristical way of spreading from the mountains to the sea. The typical streets with alleys framed by the fishing harbor which comes alive with a myriad of commercial activities. At the port, finally, the castle which worths a visit for its collection of rock specimens, archaeological ones and for the unusual stone Archimedean screw’s staircase.
Scopello. Reachable by bus from Castellammare or by car.
It is a small village which is concentrated in the square with the Sicilian beam, and it is known for the popular “Pane Cunzato” with tomato, anchovies, Primo Sale cheese, olive oil, oregano combined with the bread cooked in a wood oven. But Scopello is also the sea, with its pebble beaches and the entrance to the Zingaro natural reserve (already mentioned above).
Just from Trapani’s historical center, harbor area, you can find the hydrofoil/ferry’s departures to the islands. About every hour you can find the link to reach the islands or participate in boat excursions with lunch on board which start directly from Trapani.
Favignana: The island is shaped like a butterfly, it’s nice to visit by renting a bike or a scooter. The village is renowned for its tuna trap now converted into a Museum where you can admire the history of Mattanza. The coast instead is mostly low and sandy with the coves of Lido Burrone, Cala Azzurra, Cala Rossa, as it becomes more rocky in the area of Previto, Cala Rotonda, Faraglione.
Small and charming, the island for those who want to enjoy nature, away from mass tourism. From the village, a fishing village with whitewashed houses, you have 2 paths east and west side leading to the coves of Cala Minnola and Cala Fredda, rather than to the Faraglione and the Genovese’s prehistoric caves with its petroglyphs.
The wildest and most remote of the Egadi islands from Trapani, it deserves to be visited only with excellent weather and sea conditions. We recommend in fact the boat tours which start from the port of Trapani and that allow you to visit the village of Marettimo (1 hour and a half break in the village) and then back on board to enjoy all the high and jagged coastline which hides caves of medium and large dimensions, where it is nice to swim and discover the rich fishing grounds. After lunch on board (rustic appetizers, pasta with pesto trapanese, water, wine and fruit) you will come back to Trapani after one hour sailing.
